    What's the story

The third SA20 player auction took place in Cape Town on Tuesday, with six franchise teams finalizing their squads for the upcoming 2025 season.

The league received over 580 applications for the remaining 13 slots and six Rookie draft picks.

A total of 188 players from South Africa and around the world registered for the auction, which was conducted by renowned auctioneer Richard Madley.

    Here are further details.

    Top bid

Hendricks secured by MI Cape Town for R4.3 million

South African opener Reeza Hendricks emerged as the highest earner at the auction, with MI Cape Town securing his services for a staggering R4.3 million.

Previously a player for Joburg Super Kings, Hendricks was at the center of an intense bidding war between MI Cape Town and Pretoria Capitals.

The Newlands-based team eventually won this contest, adding him to their squad for the upcoming season.

    High earners

Gleeson and Lewis among other top earners

England pacer Richard Gleeson and West Indies batter Evin Lewis were also among the top earners at the auction.

Gleeson was secured by Sunrisers Eastern Cape for R2.3 million, while Lewis joined Pretoria Capitals for R1.5 million.

Other players who found teams include Colin Ingram (MI Cape Town - R175,000), Marques Ackerman (Pretoria Capitals - R800,000), Rubin Hermann (Paarl Royals - R175,000), and Wihan Lubbe (Joburg Super Kings - R175,000).

The auction also featured a Rookie segment that drew significant attention. Tristan Luus (MI Cape Town) and Dewan Marais (Paarl Royals), both of whom participated in the ICC U19 Men's World Cup earlier this year, were drafted at the auction.

The third season of the competition is set to commence in just 100 days when defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape face off against MI Cape Town at St George's Park in Gqeberha on January 9, 2025.
