Sanath Jayasuriya is a former professional cricket player from Sri Lanka who has formerly served as the captain of the Sri Lanka national cricket team. The left-handed batsman has played 110 Test matches and 445 ODIs in his career span. Jayasuriya is popularly known for his explosive style of batting and match-winning all-round performances in ODI matches. He is the only player in cricket history to take over 300 wickets in ODIs and score more than 10,000 runs. He is also considered as one of the greatest all-round cricketers in the history of the limited-overs format. Jayasuriya had a keen interest in the game from a very young age and served as the captain of his college cricket team. He was selected for the Sri Lanka Under-19 team in the 1988 ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup. In 1989, he made his ODI debut against Australia at Melbourne and his Test debut came in 1991 against New Zealand at Hamilton. Jayasuriya revolutionized ODI cricket with his explosive batting in the mid-90s. He played an important role in Sri Lanka’s victory in the 1996 Cricket World Cup. In 2007, Jayasuriya bid farewell to Test cricket.
