    What's the story

Ramnaresh Sarwan has been awarded $161,000 as damages in a case he filed against West Indies Cricket Board.

Even though the verdict came out in March this year, it was not made public by the West Indies Players' Association.

The arbitrator, Seenath Jairam concluded that the board treated Ramnaresh unfairly and the board was not transparent about its selection process.

    About

    Who is Ramnaresh Sarwan?

Ramnaresh Sarwan is a former West Indian cricketer and captain.

He made his debut in May 2000 against Pakistan.

After Brian Lara's retirement in 2007, Sarwan took over as captain of West Indies cricket team. But he could not play much due to his injuries. He and Chris Gayle switched captaincies whenever required.

Ramnaresh played his last international match against India in June 2013.

    Injuries

    Downfall of Sarwan

The youngest West Indian batsman to reach the 5000 runs milestone met with several health hurdles.

He collided with boundary fence in 2007, injuring his shoulder. He returned to the team in 2008.

During West Indies tour in Australia in 2009-10, Sarwan did not play the first of three tests due to an injury and played the remaining two inspite injury.

Ramnaresh Sarwan files a complaint against WICB

After the 2010 Australia series, West Indies Cricket Board(WICB) Chief Executive Ernest Hilaire sent a note to Ramnaresh Sarwan.

The note questioned his overall fitness and approach towards the game.

However, Sarwan lodged a complaint against the WICB for unfairly questioning his fitness and attitude.

He said that it damaged his reputation as professional cricketer and discouraged him to play cricket.

    Quote

    The board sullied my career

Ramnaresh Sarwan in his appeal said that the when he called Mr Hilaire he clearly stated that if I don't change my attitute, my career would end.

    Quote

    Verdict is flawed : WICB

Even though the WICB is treating the matter as 'closed', the board has said that the ruling is highly flawed.
