What's the story

Shreyas Iyer, who is currently recovering from a spleen injury, is likely to lead the Punjab Kings unit at the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction table on December 16. The decision comes as franchises were required to submit their list of representatives for the upcoming auction by December 10. According to BCCI sources, PBKS have included their captain's name in this list.

Health update

Participation contingent on health status

Iyer's participation in the auction is contingent on his health status. The star batter has been sitting out due to a spleen injury he sustained during an ODI series in Australia this year. He is now expected to be present at the auction in Abu Dhabi, leading PBKS's charge for new players. According to the BCCI and auction guidelines, up to eight team members can sit inside the auction hall. An additional six members are permitted outside.

Condition

Condition stabilized after minor surgical procedure

A minor surgical procedure was performed to stop the internal bleeding, after which Iyer's condition stabilized. The Indian batter, who was later discharged, stayed back in Sydney for follow-up assessments before returning home. On his return, the 30-year-old reassured fans that he is "getting better every passing day." Since then, Iyer has been under regular medical supervision of Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala.

Coach's absence

Ricky Ponting's absence from IPL 2026 auction

Unlike Iyer, PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting is unlikely to be present at the auction, according to Cricbuzz. The Australian cricket legend is under contract with Seven Network for Ashes commentary, and the 3rd Test starts on December 17 in Adelaide. His commentary duties aren't the only reason for his absence, as PBKS doesn't have many transactions planned at this year's auction due to a limited budget of ₹11.5 crore.

Iyer has this unique IPL record

Earlier this year, Iyer scripted history by taking three different franchises to the IPL finals. Under Iyer's leadership, PBKS finished as the IPL 2025 runners-up, losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. While Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title, Delhi Capitals played the 2020 final under him.
