What's the story

Mercedes Formula 1 team head Toto Wolff has dismissed speculation of signing reigning world champion Max Verstappen for the 2026 season. Although George Russell's contract with Mercedes expires at the end of this season, Wolff said a move for Verstappen is "not on any radar." Last year, he had talks with Verstappen, but the source does not explicitly state these talks were about signing him. Wolff ultimately decided to recruit Italian rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli as Lewis Hamilton's successor.

Loyalty

Wolff emphasizes commitment to current drivers

Wolff, however, stressed on his loyalty to the current driver lineup. "I don't flirt outside if I'm in a good relationship," he said, as per F1's official website. He also assured that there are no plans to take his focus away from the current drivers. The Mercedes boss indicated that discussions about Russell's contract would take place before the summer. "So at the moment that (a move for Verstappen) is not on any radar," he added.

Assurance

Russell confident in Mercedes contract renewal

Russell, who has been with Mercedes as part of their junior program, sounded confident about his future with the team. "We have had such a long-term relationship and so much trust between one another," he said. "I have no doubts about myself and everything falls into place when the timing is right." Wolff and Russell intend to discuss a new deal before summer, but without disrupting the current season.

Future predictions

Uncertainty looms over 2026 team competitiveness

The upcoming changes in Formula 1's technical regulations for the next season, including new rules for cars and engines, have created an uncertainty over which team will be most competitive in 2026. Red Bull have more uncertainty as they are preparing a new power unit for next year with Ford. Mercedes has been a benchmark in F1 engines since the introduction of hybrid rules in 2014.
