Can Yuvraj Singh make a comeback?
Star all-rounder Yuvraj Singh was not named in the squad for the ODI series against Sri Lanka. Chief-selector MSK Prasad said that he was not 'dropped' but 'rested'. Gambhir later argued that 'rested' was not the right word to be used and as things stand, it will be very difficult for Yuvraj to make a comeback. Is it so, really? Let us find out.
Age is a factor
At 35, Yuvraj is not growing any younger by the day. He has served the Indian team for a long time but as the general belief goes young players are always better than old warhorses. Moreover, by the time 2019 World Cup start, Yuvraj will be 37 years old, certainly not the age at which cricketers to peak.
Fitness is another strict parameter
Prasad has made it clear that going into the 2019 World Cup, fitness will be a strict parameter for every player. Even Kohli had stressed the importance of fitness. Yuvraj was one of the fittest players back in the day. But with age and injuries, he has become slightly slow on the field. This might be an obstacle for a comeback at his age.
The competition is tough
In a country like India, where there is an immense pool of talent waiting in the fringes of the national team, it is very difficult for any player to make a comeback once he is out. Players like Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Manish Pandey are vying for one single spot. Chances of Yuvraj's comeback looks bleak if he doesn't do anything special.
If anyone can, it is Yuvraj
Yuvraj is no stranger to making comebacks. He was diagnosed with cancer, received treatment and made his comeback into the team. However, his batting was not consistent and he was dropped time and again. Earlier this year, he made a superb comeback with a terrific century. If there is anyone who can make a comeback at 35, it is Yuvraj.
