What's the story

United States Vice President JD Vance has postponed his planned trip to Switzerland for negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program. The White House announced the delay, citing logistical challenges. Switzerland's foreign ministry also announced the cancellation. The decision comes after reports that Iran was also delaying sending its delegation due to Israel's military actions in Lebanon. Before Vance's trip delay, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had also postponed a visit to Switzerland for a ceremonial signing of the agreement.

Ceasefire defense

Economic relief could be revoked if Iran reduces compliance: VP

Before the postponement, Vice President JD Vance had defended an initial deal to extend a ceasefire by 60 days. He argued that while the agreement offers concessions, Iran must first comply with US demands. "As they dial up their good behavior, we can dial up the economic relief," he said, adding that if Iran reduces its compliance, economic relief could be revoked.

Agreement scrutiny

Deal's potential sanctions relief raises concerns among US lawmakers

The tentative agreement has faced criticism from some US lawmakers who fear it gives too much leeway to Iran, including sanctions relief and a potential $300 billion fund for rebuilding. However, a Trump administration envoy told lawmakers that Iran would invite the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to inspect its nuclear sites under the deal.

Negotiation endorsement

Iran's Supreme Leader backs direct negotiations, diluting uranium stockpile

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei had seemed to endorse direct negotiations for his officials, a departure from previous hard-line stances. The agreement requires Iran to dilute its stockpile of highly enriched uranium and prohibits the procurement or development of nuclear weapons. White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales confirmed that Iran must "commit to renounce their nuclear ambitions in writing."

Visit delays

Pakistan PM also delays visit for ceremonial signing of agreement

Meanwhile, Sharif's spokesperson told AFP, "The proposed visit has been postponed as the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has already been electronically signed, has entered into force, and is now under implementation." The deal was signed by President Donald Trump while dining with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles. It extends a ceasefire and gives both sides 60 days to negotiate broader agreements on larger issues.
