Somalia Supreme Court rules President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's extension unlawful
Big news from Somalia: the Supreme Court just ruled that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's move to extend his term was unlawful.
The court also said he did not have the authority to fire Chief Justice Bashe Yusuf Ahmed.
Leaders now have 30 days to agree on an electoral plan and must hold elections within 90 days, so next year's scheduled nationwide polls might be off the table.
Opposition accuses Mohamud of power grab
Opposition leaders are accusing Mohamud of trying to hang on to power by changing the constitution, while he insists it was all about helping Somalia get closer to real democratic elections.
Former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire called these moves a threat to judicial independence.
Meanwhile, Mohamud wants national talks later this month, but with so much political drama (plus ongoing security challenges), it is unclear how things will play out.
