What's the story

Game of Thrones is one of the most popular shows on the planet, and fans cannot wait for its final season. However, it's now in news for a different reason. Remember Donald Trump had tweeted a GoT poster of himself titled 'Sanctions are coming,' in November? Well, turns out that he actually used the poster during a Cabinet meeting in the White House recently.

First tweet

Trump's poster had 'Sanctions are coming', similar to GoT's slogan

As we had reported, the tweet about the Game of Thrones poster appeared from Trump's official Twitter handle, which has over 55 million followers. It showed a picture of Trump and the poster read 'Sanctions are Coming'. Not only was the font used similar to HBO's popular fantasy series, but the phrase itself reminds fans of the famous Stark motto 'Winter is Coming'.

Displeasure

HBO was not too happy about Trump's misappropriation

For those unaware, the sanctions referred to the trade sanctions the US imposed on Iran, undoing the foreign policy stance taken by the previous president, Barack Obama. However, HBO was not too pleased with parts of their show being appropriated for Trump's politics. They said, "We were not aware of this messaging and would prefer our trademark not be misappropriated for political purposes".

Real Poster

Trump appears to have ignored HBO's statement

Trump, in his usual manner, seems to have ignored HBO's request directly. While his previous poster was merely a tweet, he was recently seen at the Cabinet meeting in the White House with a real hard copy of the poster placed on the conference table, in front of him. Reporters covering the event quickly photographed and shared this image via their Twitter accounts.

Opinion

Reasons for displaying poster seems unclear

Trump's reasons for displaying the poster seems unclear. Maybe he wants to prove to HBO that he listens to no one, or maybe he wanted to remind people of the sanctions on Iran, or maybe he really likes Game of Thrones. While little is known of Trump's motives now, HBO has interestingly not reacted to this direct disregard of their request against political misappropriation.
