Ukraine secures deal for 100 French Rafale fighter jets
What's the story
Ukraine has signed a letter of intent for a major defense agreement with France, under which it will receive up to 100 Rafale F4 fighter jets. The deal was announced after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron signed a letter of intent at an air base near Paris. The delivery of the jets is expected to be completed by 2035.
Defense enhancement
Deal includes advanced air defense systems and joint production
Apart from the fighter jets, Ukraine will also receive advanced air defense systems, including "very strong French radars," eight air defense systems, and other advanced weaponry. The deal also includes the joint production of interceptor drones, which is expected to start this year. President Zelenskyy called the agreement "historic," emphasizing its importance in protecting lives.
Financial plans
France to finance deal through EU and Russian assets
While financial details are yet to be finalized, reports suggest that France plans to use European Union financing and frozen Russian assets for the deal. This move has divided opinions within the 27-member bloc. President Macron said, "We're planning Rafales, 100 Rafales - that's huge," underlining their importance in rebuilding Ukraine's military capabilities.
Ongoing efforts
Ukraine seeks additional military support from Spain
After securing this deal with France, President Zelenskyy will head to Spain for more military support. He has already reached a gas deal with Greece for US liquefied natural gas supplies via a pipeline through the Balkans this winter. The new defense agreement comes as Russia intensifies drone and missile attacks on Ukraine, targeting infrastructure and causing civilian casualties.
