What's the story

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the latest generation of its flagship SUV, the GLS. The 2027 model comes with a range of upgrades, including advanced digital intelligence and improved ride comfort. The design language has also been revamped to give it a more commanding presence on the road. The updated model features a bolder front-end identity with a larger radiator grille and optional contour lighting.

Design

The design of the SUV has been updated

The 2027 GLS also gets an upright Mercedes-Benz star on the bonnet, a signature element inspired by the S-Class. The front bumper has been redesigned for a more assertive stance, while new star-pattern LED headlights and taillamps add to its visual appeal. Mercedes has introduced fresh paint options such as Dark Petrol and Patagonia Red metallic, along with new 21-inch and 22-inch alloy wheel designs.

Tech upgrades

The interior gets an MBUX Superscreen

The interior of the GLS has been upgraded with the standard MBUX Superscreen, a glass panel that houses three 12.3-inch displays for the driver, central infotainment and front passenger. The system runs on Mercedes-Benz's new Operating System (MB.OS), which uses AI to provide a more personalized and adaptive user experience. The updated MBUX Virtual Assistant now supports natural, multi-step conversations and offers expressive avatars for an interactive interface.

Rear-seat passengers in the GLS get dual 11.6-inch screens, improved entertainment functions, and optional removable controllers for a more premium experience. The Rear Comfort Package Plus adds massaging seats, extended climate control, and other luxury touches to make the rear cabin feel like a lounge or mobile workspace. Mercedes-Benz has also focused heavily on ride comfort, especially for rear occupants of this flagship SUV.

Mercedes focused on ride comfort for rear occupants

The 2027 GLS continues with the AIRMATIC air suspension, now paired with a cloud-based damper control system that can pre-adjust the suspension settings based on upcoming road conditions. The optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL system further enhances ride quality by analyzing the driving inputs up to 1,000 times per second, and individually controlling each wheel. All variants in the lineup come with mild-hybrid technology as standard for improved performance.

Engine specifications

Petrol lineup starts from GLS450 4MATIC

The 2027 GLS range starts with the GLS 450 4MATIC, which is powered by an updated 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six petrol engine delivering a torque of 560Nm. The top-of-the-line model, GLS580 4MATIC, features a V8 mill that produces a power of 537hp, and adopts a new flat-plane crankshaft instead of a cross-plane design. This update not only boosts power but also raises peak torque to an impressive figure.

Diesel options

What about diesel variants?

The diesel lineup of the 2027 GLS includes the GLS 350d 4MATIC and GLS450d 4MATIC. Both models come with lightweight aluminum cylinder heads and crankcases, tweaked steel pistons, and improved cylinder linings for better efficiency and improved driving dynamics. The entire range features a 48V mild-hybrid system with an integrated starter generator (ISG) as well as Mercedes-Benz's 4MATIC all-wheel-drive setup for enhanced performance on different terrains.
