Honda's new hybrid engine promises better performance and fuel efficiency
Honda is rolling out a fresh V-6 hybrid engine for its larger North American SUVs and trucks, like the Pilot, Passport, and potentially the Acura MDX, beginning in 2027.
Expect about 30% better fuel efficiency and a 10% improvement in performance compared to Honda's current V-6s—meaning strong capability without guzzling as much gas.
The setup combines a new V-6 with 3 electric motors
This setup pairs a new V-6 engine with three electric motors (two up front, one in back) for all-wheel drive.
There's also a battery pack and Honda's S+ Shift tech, which fakes gear shifts and engine sounds so driving feels more engaging—even if you're just cruising.
Honda is shifting away from traditional engines
Honda is shifting gears because not everyone is ready to go fully electric yet.
The new hybrid targets drivers who want muscle for towing or road trips but aren't sold on EVs.
As part of this strategy shift, Honda will gradually retire some older V-6 engines.
