This stylish Peugeot concept previews the brand's 'feline future'
What's the story
Peugeot has revealed an image of its latest concept car, the Polygon, which previews the futuristic design and advanced technology of the next-generation Peugeot 208. The vehicle is said to have a "feline futuristic design." Although only one image has been released so far, it is clear that the third-generation 208 will be a radical departure from its predecessor.
Design influence
Polygon to influence final production model of next-gen 208
The final production model of the next-generation Peugeot 208 will be influenced by the Polygon concept. While some features will be toned down for mass production, the car's monolithic silhouette and distinct aero-defined surfacing are likely to be key design elements of the final product. This design language is expected to usher in a new era of Peugeot styling.
Interior innovation
Polygon concept showcases Peugeot's future interior designs
The Polygon concept also gives a glimpse of Peugeot's future interior designs. It features a near-production version of the brand's rectangular Hypersquare steering wheel, first seen on the 2023 Inception concept. The Hypersquare will use a steer-by-wire system, making it the first time Stellantis has used this technology in its cars.
Tech integration
Hypersquare steering to debut in Peugeot cars
Peugeot CEO Alain Favey said the new setup is "about agility" and will give future Peugeots a unique driving feel. The Polygon concept also features a 21-inch 'floating' display, likely the same curved infotainment unit as in the 3008 model. This suggests that the interior of this futuristic vehicle is near production specification.
Platform details
Next-gen Peugeot 208 to be fully electric?
The Polygon concept is likely to be built on Stellantis's upcoming STLA Small platform. This new architecture can support hybrid or electric powertrains. The current second-generation ICE 208 based on CMP is likely to continue alongside this new model due to EV market uncertainty.
Strategy commitment
Zaragoza plant to produce new cars
Favey said Peugeot is "committed to BEVs" but also "committed to a multi-energy offer." He added, "Our strategy is to leave the choice to the customer which energy they want to use." The new 208 model, expected by late next year, will be the first car based on the STLA Small platform. It will be followed by the new Corsa car. Both vehicles will continue production at Stellantis's Zaragoza plant in Spain.
