Rivian's R2 SUV gets hands-free driving and smart AI

Auto

Rivian just announced some big tech upgrades for its upcoming R2 electric SUV.
The standout is Autonomy+, a hands-free driving system that covers 3.5 million miles of US roads—outdoing rivals like GM's SuperCruise.
You'll be able to add it for a one-time $2,500 or $49.99/month.
The advanced tech upgrades (Autonomy+, lidar, etc.) are arriving late 2026, while the R2 SUV itself is launching earlier.

Smarter features for everyday driving

The R2 will also feature Rivian's new AI Assistant, which connects with third-party apps and makes in-car communication smoother.
Both the AI and Autonomy+ run on Rivian's advanced computing platform with sensors and lidar, helping keep costs down while offering more personalized features.
CEO RJ Scaringe says these upgrades are key to making Rivian more accessible and competitive beyond just niche markets.
