What's the story

Volkswagen has unveiled the second generation of its popular Atlas SUV for 2027. The first-generation model, which hit the roads nearly a decade ago, needed an update due to the increasing competition in the large three-row SUV segment. The new Atlas shares its platform and exterior design with Teramont Pro sold in China. However, it does come with some unique features like physical door handles.

Design continuity

The SUV is offered in 3 new color options

The new Atlas retains the silhouette of its predecessor but rides on an updated MQB platform. The SUV will be offered in three new colors: Sacramento Green, Blackberry, and Sandstone. The Sacramento Green color was seen in person and is a great addition to the color palette.

Interior upgrades

It features 15-inch center screen

The interior of the new Atlas has been completely revamped. The base model comes with a 12.9-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get an optional 15-inch center screen. The same screen is used in other VW products such as Tiguan and features controversial haptic touch sliders for volume and HVAC controls. There is also a physical volume knob on the center console for added convenience.

Premium features

It also gets Nappa leather upholstery in 2 color options

The new Atlas also gets upgraded materials with real wood accents on the dashboard for upper-trim models and Nappa leather upholstery in two color options. It also comes with signature designs on door cards and passenger-side of the dashboard, both featuring embedded LEDs that can change color with interior lights. Other tech features include two wireless MagSafe charging docks up front, USB-C ports in all three rows, and heated/ventilated seats for front/rear passengers.

Performance specs

The SUV is powered by an updated 2.0-liter engine

The new Atlas is powered by an updated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, same as the Tiguan. However, due to its larger size, the Atlas gets a power boost to 282hp and torque of up to 343Nm. The base model comes with standard front-wheel drive while all models can be upgraded with Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system for better performance on different terrains.
