Android phone exports from India surge
India is quickly becoming a major smartphone exporter, especially to the US.
Thanks to high US tariffs on China and India's Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, brands like Motorola and Samsung are shipping way more phones from India.
In just the first five months of 2025, Motorola nearly doubled its exports to 1.6 million units, with almost all of them headed for the US.
Samsung also boosted its numbers compared to last year.
High tariffs on Chinese phones are driving this shift
Big tariffs—55% on Chinese phones—have pushed companies like Motorola and Samsung to shift more manufacturing to India for better access to the US market.
Even contract manufacturer Dixon Technologies is expanding fast, growing its capacity by 50% just to keep up with demand.
Apple led with over 20 million iPhones shipped
The PLI scheme isn't just helping Android makers; Apple's partners are winning too.
In FY2024-25, India's smartphone exports jumped 55%, hitting $24.14 billion—outpacing even petroleum and diamond exports for the first time ever!
Apple led with over 20 million iPhones shipped early this year, mostly straight to American buyers.
Other brands like Transsion and Vivo are ramping up exports
Other brands like Transsion and Vivo are ramping up exports from India too, though Chinese brands face hurdles due to tariffs and limited access in the US.
All this action shows how quickly India is turning into a key player in the world's smartphone supply chain.
