India to relax quality control orders for MSMEs

Business

India is taking a fresh look at its Quality Control Orders (QCOs)—the rules that set standards for certain products, both domestic and imported—while negotiating new trade deals with countries like the US and EU.
One key aim is to make life easier for small and medium businesses (MSMEs), which have struggled under these regulations—especially when importing raw materials for sectors like textiles, aluminum, and steel.

Breathing room for MSMEs

For a lot of MSMEs, QCOs have made importing key materials tougher and more expensive.
During this review, no new QCOs will be added, giving these businesses a bit of breathing room.
Developed countries see these rules as trade barriers and want them relaxed in upcoming Free Trade Agreements—so finding the right balance could shape how Indian companies compete globally.
