Karnataka wants Anthropic's help to prevent fraud in government systems

Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar met a delegation from AI start-up Anthropic today. The meeting was held at Vidhana Soudha and was led by Michael Sellitto, Head of International Policy at Anthropic. It was facilitated by Karnataka's Electronics, IT and Home Minister Priyank Kharge as part of the state's efforts to connect with global AI leaders and strengthen its own ecosystem.

During the meeting, Shivakumar shared his vision of an all-encompassing AI ecosystem.
This includes plans for an AI university in Bengaluru, large-scale skilling programs, and support for deep-tech innovation.
"Both sides discussed introducing AI-focused certification programs, including Claude certification, under state's NIPUNA initiative to create one of the country's largest pools of AI-certified talent," said an official.
Sectoral focus
Use of AI in healthcare and life sciences
The discussions also revolved around the use of AI in healthcare and life sciences, especially scientific research with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).
Anthropic showed interest in backing AI-driven research and skilling programs in higher education.
Shivakumar suggested subsidized access to Anthropic's Claude AI platform for higher education institutions, including Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), to bolster AI education and research.
Security measures
Responsible AI deployment and cybersecurity
Shivakumar sought Anthropic's expertise in using AI to prevent fraud in government systems.
He emphasized improving the security, confidentiality and efficiency of question paper preparation for exams conducted by government agencies and educational institutions.
The talks also focused on responsible AI deployment with safeguards against cyber threats and protection of citizen data as guiding principles for future adoption.
Start-up engagement
Support for Karnataka's start-up ecosystem
The meeting explored collaborations to support Karnataka's start-up ecosystem, with Anthropic offering to work with over 20,000 state-based start-ups. This is especially true for those in the deep-tech sector.
The two sides also discussed partnerships with NGOs and public institutions to ensure AI technologies provide broader social benefits.
They even explored setting a milestone for the first 100 days of their proposed collaboration.
