What's the story

Swiggy's Instamart saw a massive spike in orders on Valentine's Day, with chocolates and roses topping the list. The company's co-founder, Phani Kishan, said that during peak hours, the platform received an unbelievable 581 chocolate orders and 324 rose orders per minute. Kishan compared this spike in demand to a 'bull run' in the stock market.

Order details

Record-breaking orders highlight consumer trends

Kishan revealed that one customer in Delhi ordered a bulk of 174 chocolates, shelling out ₹29,844 in total. He added that by 10:53am, Swiggy Instamart had already delivered double the number of chocolates it did on last Valentine's Day.

Flower power

Roses steal the spotlight amid chocolate frenzy

Despite the emphasis on chocolate sales, Kishan emphasized that roses were also a major contributor to the Valentine's Day rush. He said, "We were tracking chocolates, but clearly, roses are stealing the spotlight. With 16 times more orders than a regular Friday, it looks like everyone is saying it with flowers!" This shows a strong consumer inclination toward traditional romantic gestures on this special day.

Sales trend

Valentine's Day sales echo New Year's Eve trends

The Valentine's Day sales spike on Swiggy Instamart is similar to what we saw during the New Year's Eve celebrations. As Business World reported, cities such as Ludhiana, Rajkot, Pondicherry, and Kanpur witnessed an abnormally high volume of orders during this time. Chips topped as the most ordered item with 853 orders per minute, followed by chocolates and soft drinks. This indicates consumers prefer online platforms for their festive purchases.
