Self-deprecating, not disrespectful: Aryan Khan explains 'Bads of Bollywood' vision
What's the story
Aryan Khan, the son of superstar Shah Rukh Khan, recently opened up about his directorial debut, The Ba***ds of Bollywood. In a conversation with Variety, he explained how the team carefully balanced humor and respect for their industry. "We wanted to be self-deprecating but not disrespectful anywhere," he said. "I think we maintained that line correctly."
Tone and genre
'We had guardrails about the tone'
Khan further elaborated on the show's tone, saying, "We had other guardrails about the tone. Are we that show which goes into constantly spoofy slapstick genre? Perhaps not." "Do we have spoofy and slapstick moments? Yes. But is that serious or is that a joke? It's bending many genres and merging many things." He described the series as "a family drama at its core," emphasizing emotion as central to storytelling.
Scenes inspired by reality
Khan admits some scenes are inspired by real incidents
Khan added, "What is interesting about the show is, in Bollywood, there are many truths, many lies, that kind of are disguised.. and it's just the novelty of that entices audiences." "We were pushing it for screen, obviously, but there'll be scenes that are inspired by realities, and there'll be exaggerations." "We did get some notes on certain scenes where they were like, 'Oh, this is too this, or this is too that,' but then I took a stand."
