Auction of Rabindranath Tagore's handwritten letters
A rare set of 35 handwritten letters by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, written to sociologist Dhurjati Prasad Mukerji between 1927 and 1936, is going under the hammer at Mumbai's Astaguru Auction House on June 26-27.
These letters, featuring Visva-Bharati University and houseboat Padma letterheads, are expected to fetch ₹5-7 crore.
Letters dive into Tagore's creative mind
These aren't just old letters—they offer a peek into Tagore's creative mind. He talks about why imagination matters more than strict realism, calls out intolerance among intellectuals, and shares thoughts on his poetic journey (including how Gitanjali became modern).
Some of these pieces have never been published before. The auction also highlights other Indian art legends like Nandalal Bose and Krishen Khanna, making it a big moment for anyone interested in culture or history.
