Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro took a stand against artificial intelligence (AI) in Hollywood while accepting the Vanguard Tribute for his film Frankenstein at the Gotham Awards on Monday (US time). He said, "F**k AI," stressing that "the artistry of all [crew, technicians, and actors] shines on every single frame of this film that was willfully made by humans, for humans." The film was released on Netflix in November.

del Toro, who was joined by actors Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac, began his speech by paying homage to Mary Shelley's classic horror story. He revealed that he had wanted to adapt it into a film since he first read the book at 11. "I understood that back then, through her work and the first glimpse of [actor] Boris Karloff, that I did not belong in the world the way my parents, the way the world expected me to fit."

The film is expected to compete in nine categories for the upcoming Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Visual Effects, and Best Supporting Actor for Elordi.
