'Concerning': Suparn S Varma on violence against women in films
What's the story
Acclaimed Indian director Suparn S Varma recently opened up about his views on violence in films, especially when it comes to women. The Haq director called such aggression "concerning" and stressed the need for boundaries. He also asserted that all kinds of films should be allowed to be made without any societal impact filtering.
Statement
'All kinds of films should be allowed': Varma
Speaking to Zoom, Varma said, "When I am talking about violence, I love violence... But the kind of violence Neeraj (Ghaywan) spoke about, violence toward women...is extremely problematic." "My worry is slightly different. It's that you give rise to a certain voice which is more insular in nature when you curb it." "If we begin to impose restrictions and...prevent certain expressions from occurring, as a liberal, you want everyone to have a voice, yet you also want to act responsibly."
Film defense
Varma previously defended 'Dhurandhar' against violence criticism
Last month, Varma had defended the newly released film Dhurandhar, starring Ranveer Singh and Akshaye Khanna, against criticism over its extreme violence. He pointed out that audiences often consume similar bloodshed in Korean and Japanese movies without the same level of backlash. On social media, he wrote, "Amazed by some of the chatter about the violence in Dhurandhar the same viewers would have called it cinematic brilliance if this was in any other language or a Korean or Japanese film."
