Madras High Court gives Seeman a breather in defamation row

Entertainment

Tamil actor-politician Seeman just got some relief from the Madras High Court in a defamation case filed by IPS officer Varun Kumar.
The judge said the lower court messed up the process—summons were sent out before even hearing Seeman's side, which isn't how it's supposed to work.

What's this all about?

Back in July 2024, Seeman called DIG Varun Kumar "casteist by birth" after police arrested an NTK member for making derogatory remarks about former chief minister M. Karunanidhi during the Vikravandi by-election campaign.
Kumar, who later became DIG of Tiruchi range, hit back with a ₹2 crore defamation suit.
Now, the High Court has tossed out the summons and says any refiling must follow proper rules and give Seeman a chance to respond.

Things got heated online

The fight didn't stop there—Kumar's family faced online abuse from NTK supporters.
By December 2024, both sides were trading accusations: Kumar said Seeman questioned his Tamil identity; Seeman claimed Kumar was being used against his party by the DMK government.
