New Regency, Amazon revamp 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith' into series

New Regency is taking another chance to revamp its action-comedy Mr. & Mrs. Smith. This time, the production company is joining Amazon Prime Video and the stars taking the roles of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, respectively. Both the stars are acting and executive producing this series. Isn't that a lot of that sizzling chemistry we all loved?

Series part of Waller-Bridge's overall Amazon Studios deal

Francesca Sloane has been roped in as the showrunner of this series, scheduled to premiere in 2022. This series is part of Waller-Bridge's overall Amazon Studios deal signed in 2019. Amazon posted about the project in two different ways, starting with brand head Jennifer Salke tweeting about the star-studded collaborations and then the official handle of Amazon Studios urged fans to drop conspiracy theories.

Prime Video wants us to drop conspiracy theories!

But what does that really mean?? Drop your conspiracy theories below. pic.twitter.com/sWZXpWpYnM

The film earned about $500mn globally

The film starred Pitt and Jolie in roles promising more than on-screen chemistry, as Pitt fell in love with Jolie on set, divorced wife Jennifer Aniston, and then the name-blend Brangelina was born. The 2005 film earned almost $500mn globally. New Regency's Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer said Glover suggested this idea, after which Phoebe and her company Well Streets Films were involved.

A sequel was impossible, said Jolie earlier

In an interview with Vanity Fair, 11 years ago, Jolie laid down the reasons why a sequel, which was on-demand back then, was impossible with the couple's not-so-exciting future. "It becomes personal now that we actually have kids. We did ask somebody to look into Mr. & Mrs. to see if they could crack a sequel, but there wasn't anything original," Jolie remarked.

This will be Glover and Waller-Bridge's second project together

Glover and Waller-Bridge will share screen space after Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), where the two played Lando Calrissian and droid L3-37. However, netizens were divided over the need to revamp a singularly successful movie such as this. Twitterati also pondered over whether the current actors will be able to recreate the sexually charged atmosphere of the original movie.

Fans weigh in on how good this take will be

I’m sure it’ll be a creative take bc it literally has to be and they’re talented but.. like why... also I just refuse to see him as Mr. Smith and no yt woman is comparable to Angelina Jolie in my eyes but ig it’ll just be a... new... Mr. and Mrs. Smith😔
