Why Shilpa-Akshay broke up on the verge of marriage

Actors Shilpa Shetty and Akshay Kumar were in a relationship in the 1990s but broke up after a few years. In a recent interview, filmmaker Suneel Darshan revealed that the couple was close to getting married when Shetty's parents imposed certain conditions. He suggested that their unmet demands might have contributed to the breakup.

'Destiny has its own plans'
Speaking to Bollywood Thikana, Darshan described Shetty and Kumar as a "good looking couple" but added that "destiny has its own plans." He recalled hearing from an astrologer that Kumar and Twinkle Khanna (Kumar's current wife) were destined to marry. However, he didn't take it seriously at the time, as they weren't even dating then.
Conditions
'Life would have taken a different turn...'
Darshan said, "Look at the coincidence, had Shilpa's parents not placed those conditions, life would have taken a different turn." When asked about these conditions, he said they were "whatever the parents need for the security of their daughter." He emphasized that it was not wrong for parents to seek such security, but also expressed his disapproval of Shetty's parents' demands.

Darshan defended Kumar amid breakup rumors
Darshan also defended Kumar when asked if he was heartbroken after the breakup. He said, "His heart was not broken. I thought he was doing well. He was coming back." At that time, Kumar was busy with multiple projects, including Dhadkan, Hera Pheri, and Ek Rishta. Shetty later married businessman Raj Kundra in 2009, and they have two children together. Meanwhile, Kumar tied the knot with Khanna in 2001, and they are parents to two kids as well.
