'Slumdog Millionaire' unlikely to be made today, claims Danny Boyle
Director Danny Boyle recently admitted that his hit film Slumdog Millionaire wouldn't get made in today's climate.
"We wouldn't be able to make that now. And that's how it should be," he said, reflecting on the cultural baggage and the importance of local filmmakers telling such stories.
'Flawed method...'
Boyle explained that while most of the cast and crew were Indian, only a small UK team went to Mumbai, which he now sees as "a flawed method."
He feels such stories deserve to be told by local filmmakers, acknowledging the "cultural baggage we carry" and how colonial history shapes these conversations.
More about his career
Though Boyle once saw Slumdog Millionaire as "radical," he now thinks its approach wouldn't fly today—and he's okay with that.
He described his career as more about popular entertainment than chasing Hollywood fame, but admits times (and expectations) have changed.
