    What's the story

The award for the Best Actor in a Leading role went to Lenoardo DiCaprio for "The Revenant", his first win ever.

The other nominees included Bryan Cranston for "Trumbo, Michael Fassbender for "Steve Jobs", Matt Damon for "The Martian" and Eddie Redmayne for "The Danish Girl".

The award for the Best Actor in a Supporting role went to Mark Rylance for "Bridge of Spies".

    Origins

    The Academy Awards

Hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy Awards is an annual American awards ceremony honouring excellence in cinematic achievement in the film industry.

The Academy's voting membership elects the winners.

The first Academy Awards ceremony was held on 16 May 1929 with a tiny audience of just 270 people.

Today, more than 44 million people worldwide watch the ceremony.

    Presenters

The presenters and performers at the Oscars 2016

The Academy Awards sees some of the biggest names in the global film industry.

The 88th Academy Awards was hosted by Chris Rock, with huge names like Kate Winslet, Morgan Freeman, Whoopi Goldberg, Benecio Del Toro, Jared Leto, Charlize Theron and India's very own Priyanka Chopra, among others, handing out awards.

Musical performances included those by Lady Gaga, Sam Smith, The Weeknd among others.

    Controversy

Host Chris Rock calls Hollywood racist

Chris Rock, the host of the 88th Academy Awards, said, "Is Hollywood racist? You're damn right Hollywood's racist!"

He elaborated by saying that Hollywood was not "burning cross racist", but "sorority racist".

Calling the Oscars "the White People's Choice Awards", he concluded by saying, "Give black actors the same opportunities as white actors...Leo gets a great part every year. What about Jamie Foxx?"

    Speeches

Acceptance speeches cut short to reduce run time

Due to complaints from the audience regarding the huge run time of the Academy Awards ceremonies, this year, the Academy has asked participants to cut short their acceptance speeches.

Instead, the nominees (and eventual winners) have been asked to prepare a list of people they would like to thank which would be displayed at the bottom of the screen during their acceptance speeches.
