Starved, lying in excreta: Delhi-woman held captive by brother, rescued

In a shocking incident, a 50-year-old woman, who was held captive by her own brother for two years, was rescued by Delhi Commission for Women on Tuesday. The woman lived at her paternal home in Rohini, with her brother and his wife. Her pathetic condition came to fore when another brother of the woman dialed DCW's helpline 181. Her captivity details are horrific.

Woman lied in her own excreta, wasn't given food regularly

The woman was starved and reduced to bones. Apparently, she was served one slice of bread every four days. She was found lying on the terrace wallowing in her own urine and faeces. DCW Chief, Swati Maliwal wrote on Twitter the woman couldn't talk, walk or recognize people. "She is only 50 years, but she looks as though she is over 90," she added.

Another brother tells woman wasn't allowed to meet anyone

The woman lived with her mother, but after her death, the younger brother took over her responsibility. The brother, who complained, said the mentally ill woman wasn't allowed to meet anyone. When DCW officials reached the house, the accused and his wife showered abuses on them and refused to open the door. They sought help from Delhi police, and local SHO sent a team.

Maliwal was upset neighbors didn't inform authorities about woman

When the accused didn't let officials in, Delhi police members entered the house via neighbor's roof. Further, Maliwal said she was upset the locals didn't tell authorities about her. "I feel sad that none of the neighbors thought of informing the police or the Commission about this," she said. She urged people to come forward and report such cases to prevent suffering.

FIR filed but brother yet to be arrested: Maliwal
