8 cardiac deaths reported in 1st week of Sabarimala pilgrimage

India

The Sabarimala pilgrimage has started with a concerning spike in heart-related deaths—eight people have died from cardiac issues just in the first week.
This is much higher than usual, highlighting how tough the trek can be on the body.
Health official Bipin Gopal shared that, on average, about 40-42 pilgrims lose their lives to heart problems each year.

Health department steps up safety for pilgrims

To help keep everyone safer this season, emergency medical units and intensive cardiac care spots have been set up along key points of the route like Appachimedu, Neelimala, Pampa, and Sannidhanam.
Still, crowded paths and rough terrain make quick help a challenge.
The health department is urging all pilgrims to train physically before coming, stick to their meds, take breaks often, and watch out for warning signs like heavy sweating—if you notice anything off, don't wait to get medical help.
