Triple Talaq banned! What's Muslim Law Board up to now?

After the Supreme Court banned triple talaq, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) called for a working committee meeting on 10 September in Bhopal. The Board will decide its further course of action and discuss the SC verdict. AIMPLB would release an "official stand" after internal deliberations, adding the judgment, affecting Muslims' religious rights, will have "wide ramifications." Know more!

AIMPLB executive member Kamaal Farooqui's statement

AIMPLB's Kamaal Farooqui stated: "Court order has affected the rights of religious minority to practice their religion. So it will be having wide ramifications. Our feeling is that the judgment does not follow the Constitutional guarantees."

What's on the agenda of the AIMPLB meeting?

While the SC's verdict on triple talaq would be the most important element on the agenda, AIMPLB would also discuss other issues, including the Babri mosque case. The Board reiterated interference in Muslim personal laws wouldn't be allowed. However, AIMPLB's working committee member and senior counsel, Zafaryab Jilani, said it isn't appropriate to comment on the SC's judgment without studying it in detail.

AIMPLB to hold discussions with legal and executive committees

Farooqui stated AIMPLB would take a "serious view" of the verdict and then "issue a reaction." Jilani feels the government wouldn't be required to bring any legislation as that will again be against Muslims' fundamental rights. He said the consequences of the SC verdict, how far it will help Muslims' rights or go against the same could be ascertained after studying the judgment.

Will continue to carry on with reform work: AIMPLB

AIMPLB's Jilani said: "We will try out best to carry on our reform programme throughout the community. And to ensure that this practice of triple divorce in one sitting without any lawful justification may come to an end."

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board

AIMPLB deals with the personal laws concerning Muslims in India; it had been opposing the move to ban triple talaq. In Apr'17, it issued a "code of conduct" for preventing the misuse of triple talaq and other Shariah (Islamic laws). AIMPLB President Mohammaed Rabey Hasan Nadwi earlier said that it is their responsibility to implement triple talaq, which was meant to protect women.

Former Law Minister Kapil Sibal represented AIMPLB in SC

Representing AIMPLB, Sibal stated: "Triple talaq has been there since 637 AD. Who are we to say that this is un-Islamic. Muslims are practicing it for last 1,400 years. It is a matter of faith. Hence, there is no question of constitutional morality and equity."
