    Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar directed the health authorities to create awareness about Nipah virus at "panchayat levels" while laying the foundation stone of 301 health-related schemes worth Rs. 784cr in the state yesterday. The state government also issued an advisory about the deadly virus, asking people to adopt preventive measures. Nitish further emphasized his government is focusing on improving healthcare facilities. Here's more.

    Want to develop PMCH into world class hospital: Nitish

    Nitish said he wanted to develop Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) into a world-class organization. The hospital, which will take around eight years for completion, will have 5000 beds. PMCH will be connected with Ganga Path, a 20.5km driveway along river Ganga, and a flyover will be built on Ashok Rajpath, so that patients don't face problems in reaching the hospital, he said.

    Number of patients visiting primary health centers crosses 10,000-mark

    An official survey in February 2006 showed only 39 patients used to visit primary health-centers in a month. But the figure increased to 1,500-2,000 in November 2006, following several steps taken by the Bihar government, Nitish said, adding that today, the number has crossed 10,000.

    Dispose of medical-waste or face action: Deputy CM to hospitals

    Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi said that all hospitals must dispose of biomedical waste, failing which the state government would be forced to take action against them. The state government hospitals having more than 10 beds will be equipped with Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) at an estimated cost ranging between Rs. 75,000 and Rs. 5 lakh, the Deputy CM added.
