Dalai Lama's succession: Clarity expected today

The Dalai Lama just turned 90 and marked the occasion with a big celebration in Dharamsala, India—about 7,000 people showed up, including Indian officials and international guests.
During the festivities, he shared that his next successor won't be born in Chinese-controlled Tibet but somewhere in the "free world."
This move is meant to keep his spiritual mission going strong, even as China refuses to recognize any successor chosen outside its borders.

TL;DR

Plan to ensure his institution continues after he's gone

On his birthday, people around the world celebrated what he stands for. It's a reminder of how far his message of nonviolence and harmony has traveled beyond Tibet.
The Dalai Lama also said there's now a plan to make sure his institution continues after he's gone—a big step for Tibetan exiles who've looked to him since he left Tibet back in 1959.
