December bank holiday alert: Up to 19 closures across India
Heads-up: Banks across India will be closed for up to 19 days in December 2025, depending on where you live.
Everyone gets a day off on December 25 for Christmas, but there are plenty of state-specific holidays too—like Nagaland's State Inauguration Day (Dec 1), Goa's Feast of St. Francis Xavier (Dec 3) and Liberation Day (Dec 19), Sikkim's Losoong/Namsoong (Dec 20 & 22), and several remembrance days in Meghalaya.
What about the northeast?
Some northeastern states, such as Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Nagaland, have extra closures for Christmas Eve (Dec 24) and the day after (Dec 26).
Mizoram and Manipur banks also shut down on New Year's Eve (Dec 31).
Plus, as usual, all banks are closed every Sunday and on the second and fourth Saturdays this month.
Will online banking work?
No worries—your UPI payments, mobile apps, and other digital banking will still work fine.
But if you need to visit a branch for things like cheques or lockers, it's smart to plan ahead so you don't get caught out by all these holidays.
