Elderly man commits suicide over police inaction in registering case

A 60-year-old man, who was reportedly upset over police inaction in registering a dowry harassment case against his daughter's in-laws, committed suicide at Purbaliyan village in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district today. According to the victim's family, Akhtar took the extreme step as the police failed to register an FIR against the harassment of his daughter by her in-laws for dowry.

Circle Officer Rajiv Kumar Singh said five persons, including the son-in-law of the deceased, have been booked. Singh said Akhtar's daughter married Mir Hasan in 2012. Hasan and his family used to harass the deceased's daughter, and the woman was living with her parents since April 1. An inquiry has been ordered into the allegations of police inaction, the officer added.
