India's new seismic map puts Himalayan region on highest earthquake alert

India

India just released its most detailed earthquake risk map yet, and for the first time, the entire Himalayan arc is now marked as Zone VI—the top danger level.
Over half the country is now officially in moderate to high-risk zones, reflecting a much clearer understanding of where earthquakes might hit hardest.

What's changed with this new map?

Instead of relying on old records and soil types, scientists used fresh data from faults and underground geology.
This update fixes earlier underestimations—especially in the central Himalayas—and gives a more accurate picture of real risks.

Why should you care?

Safer building rules are coming: The new code requires things like ceilings and water tanks to be firmly secured, which matters since 75% of Indians live in quake-prone areas.
Plus, hospitals and schools will need to stay functional after big quakes—so disaster response can actually work when it counts.
