Justice Surya Kant is now Chief Justice of India
Justice Surya Kant just took over as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on Monday, with President Droupadi Murmu administering the oath.
He chose to take his oath in Hindi, promising to uphold the Constitution.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah attended the ceremony.
He succeeds Justice BR Gavai, who demitted office on November 23, and will serve until February 9, 2027.
His journey and impact
Starting out in Haryana back in 1984, Justice Kant quickly made a markāhe became the state's youngest Advocate General by 2000.
After years as a High Court judge, he joined the Supreme Court in 2019.
He's known for important rulings on Article 370 and One Rank-One Pension, plus his push for gender justice and electoral reforms throughout his career.
