Ladakh: Apex Body co-chair Dorjey placed under house arrest

India

Chering Dorjey, co-chair of the Apex Body Leh, was put under house arrest on Friday by Ladakh's administration.
This comes after plans for a silent march and blackout in Leh and Kargil, organized to demand a judicial probe into the violence on September 24 that left four people dead during demonstrations for statehood and special status.

Authorities impose restrictions

To keep things under control, authorities have banned gatherings, cut internet access, and stopped the use of loudspeakers.
Even with a judicial probe now underway—led by retired Supreme Court judge BS Chauhan—locals are still protesting for more autonomy.
The ongoing house arrest of leaders like Dorjey and the jailing of activist Sonam Wangchuk show just how tense things have become between officials and people demanding change in Ladakh.
