Mumbai's Elphinstone bridge demolition: Key section awaits final plans

India

Mumbai's iconic Elphinstone Bridge is coming down, but the trickiest part—right above the railway tracks—is still waiting for a green light.
To keep train chaos to a minimum, Central Railway and MRIDC are ditching the idea of one long block and instead looking at shorter, four-hour weekend blocks.
There's even talk of moving overhead cables so some work can happen in just 2.5 hours at night.

What's next for the bridge?

Demolition kicked off back in September 2025 with basic roadwork removals as part of a ₹167-crore upgrade linked to the Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector.
The old bridge should be fully gone by January 2026, making way for a new double-decker version by early 2027.
Meanwhile, officials are still sorting out who pays what—Central and Western Railways have new usage charges on the table, just waiting for MMRDA's nod.
