What's the story

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated a major housing and infrastructure project in Delhi. The project, worth ₹15,200 crore, is part of the General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) redevelopment scheme. It includes the inauguration of 2,722 newly constructed flats and the foundation stone laying for 6,632 more under this initiative.

Redevelopment goals

Redevelopment of 7 old government housing colonies

The project will redevelop seven old government housing colonies in Delhi. These include Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar, Nauroji Nagar, Kasturba Nagar, Thyagraj Nagar, Sriniwaspuri, and Mohammadpur. The redevelopment will cover an area of around 537 acres and aims to replace the old low-rise buildings with modern high-rise residential complexes to address the shortage of more than 20,000 houses for central government employees.

Housing boost

Addressing the shortage of government accommodation in Delhi

The redevelopment project is expected to provide over 21,000 new residential units and improve infrastructure and public amenities. Many existing quarters in these colonies are old and structurally unsafe, with nearly 40% declared uninhabitable. The project aims to meet the demand for more than 20,000 houses for central government employees.

Funding model

Self-financing model to fund the redevelopment

The redevelopment is being done under a self-financing model and does not require public funds. About 69.41 acres of the total project area will be monetized for commercial and residential use to fund the redevelopment. This limited land monetization is expected to generate over ₹35,100 crore, covering the estimated redevelopment cost of around ₹32,800 crore.

On March 8, PM Modi will also inaugurate two new corridors of the Delhi Metro. The Majlis Park-Maujpur Babarpur (Pink Line) corridor is around 12.3km long, while the Deepali Chowk-Majlis Park (Magenta Line) corridor is around 9.9km long. These new corridors will improve connectivity in several areas of Delhi, such as Burari and Jagatpur-Wazirabad, among others.
