Pune-Mumbai highway accident claims life of woman pilgrim

India

A serious accident on the old Pune-Mumbai highway took the life of Priyanka Prabhakar Tandel, 54, and left 10 others hurt on Tuesday morning.
An out-of-control container truck first hit a parked autorickshaw, then crashed into a group of warkaris (pilgrims) walking from Uran-Panvel to Alandi at Kamshet Ghati.

Truck driver detained, probe underway

The collision was so forceful that Tandel was dragged several meters and died at the scene.
The injured, including Aparna Ananta Thakur and Hirabai Poshya Patil, were taken to hospital.
Locals and fellow pilgrims blocked traffic in protest, seeking the arrest of the truck driver.
Police have detained the truck driver, Chandrashekhar Ramankat, and launched an investigation.
