Sabarimala, Malikappuram temples get new priests ahead of pilgrimage season
Big news for Kerala's famous hill shrines: Prasad E D from Chalakudy is the new chief priest (melsanthi) at Sabarimala, while Manu Namboothiri M G from Mayyanadu will lead the nearby Malikappuram temple.
Both were chosen through a traditional draw after prayers this Saturday and will officially start on November 16.
Prasad applied thrice for the post
These appointments come right before the Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season, when lakhs of devotees visit.
Prasad, who's been serving as chief priest elsewhere and applied three times for this post, said, "I am very happy. Words fail to express my happiness. I cannot ask for anything more."
The draw was conducted by children of the Pandalam royal family—in accordance with the Supreme Court's 2011 directive and tradition—with temple officials overseeing everything.
Prasad, Manu Namboothiri will guide worshippers through busy season
With pilgrim crowds about to surge, Prasad and Manu Namboothiri will guide worshippers through one of the busiest times at these iconic temples.
Sabarimala, in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district, draws millions every year to honor Lord Ayyappa.
