SC delays hearing on Sonam Wangchuk's detention under NSA

India

The Supreme Court has pushed back the hearing on climate activist Sonam Wangchuk's detention case to December 8.
Wangchuk, who was detained on September 26 for allegedly sparking violence during Ladakh protests, is being held under the National Security Act—a move his wife calls "illegal and arbitrary," saying it violates his rights.

What's behind the controversy?

Wangchuk was detained after protests in Leh demanding statehood and more autonomy for Ladakh turned deadly.
While officials blame him for inciting unrest, supporters highlight his long-standing work in education and conservation.
His wife insists he actually condemned the violence online and always stood for peace.
The court has asked the government to explain why he's still being held, especially since, according to his wife's plea, the grounds for his detention are based on stale FIRs.
