Tamil Nadu takes NEET exemption fight to Supreme Court
Tamil Nadu has gone to the Supreme Court after the President refused to approve its bill that would let students get into medical school based on their Class XII marks, instead of the national NEET exam.
The President withheld assent in March, following advice from the Union government but gave no explanation.
Why does this matter?
The state says this move goes against constitutional rules that let states make their own laws on certain issues with Presidential approval.
Leaders argue NEET puts rural and government school students at a disadvantage, especially those who can't afford expensive coaching.
Chief Minister MK Stalin called it a "dark chapter in federalism" and all parties in Tamil Nadu have agreed to step up legal action.
The outcome could impact how much say states have over education policies.
