Tamil Nadu universities stuck without Vice Chancellors
Right now, 14 universities in Tamil Nadu don't have Vice Chancellors (VCs)—and some have been waiting for as long as 18 months to three years.
This leadership gap started when a new bill tried to shift the power of picking VCs from the Governor to the state government back in April 2024.
But since the bill is still sitting with the Governor and hasn't been signed off, everything's on hold.
What's making things so complicated?
The Supreme Court just ruled that if the Governor doesn't act on a bill for months, it doesn't mean it's automatically approved—so no shortcuts there.
Plus, disagreements between the state government and Raj Bhavan over who gets to pick VCs are keeping things at a standstill.
All this back-and-forth means students and universities are left waiting for real leadership.
