Gujarat: Woman kidnaps newborn baby to force boyfriend into marriage

A woman in Gujarat, who had abducted a newborn from a hospital in Jamnagar, confessed that she did so to pressurize her boyfriend to marry her. She wanted to convince him that the child was his. Her boyfriend had earlier refused to get married to her. Later, on the same day, she called the police and handed over the child saying she found it lying abandoned near a temple.

Woman, disguised as nurse, took baby from grandmother

On December 7, 20-year-old Shilpa Vaghela, a resident of Khodiyar colony in Jamnagar, dressed as a nurse, took the newborn girl from her grandmother on the pretext of giving her an injection and filling some forms. When she didn't return, the baby's concerned family informed the police. The CCTV footage of the hospital did show a nurse taking away the baby girl.

Vaghela's parents convinced her to return the child

However, when Vaghela took the child to her home, her parents convinced her to return the child. Fearing that she would get caught, Vaghela changed her clothes and get-up, and called the police to inform them about the child. She told the police that she found the infant girl left abandoned near Khodiyar temple. The child was then returned to her parents.

Boyfriend refused to marry, told her to abort child earlier

Cops, however, suspected Vaghela and kept a watch on her movements. Subsequently, she was arrested day before. She confessed that she was in love with a boy, who had refused to marry her. In June, Vaghela told him that she was pregnant, but he gave her a tablet to get the child aborted. She still persisted on getting married, and eventually executed this drama.

Vaghela is an ITI student; booked for kidnapping a child

Jamnagar Superintendent of Police (SP), Sharad Singhal, said, "She wanted to pressurize her boyfriend into marriage. They were in a relationship for three years." Vaghela is currently studying in ITI Jamnagar and has been booked under IPC Section 363 for kidnapping a child.
