    World Kidney Day is celebrated every year on the second Thursday of March to raise awareness about the importance of our kidneys and how to prevent kidney-related diseases. This year, the day is being celebrated on March 10. World Kidney Day was started as a joint initiative by the International Federation of Kidney Foundations and the International Society of Nephrology. Here's more to it!

    Significance of the day

    This year's theme for World Kidney Day is "Bridge the knowledge gap to better kidney health." The day was first observed in 2006 in 66 countries with the aim to make people aware of kidney-related problems and the treatments available for them. It also aims to prevent the increasing cases of kidney ailments across the world through various health awareness campaigns.

    Exercise regularly for better kidney health

    Kidneys are vital organs in your body that are responsible for removing waste, filtering your blood, and regulating the electrolyte levels in your body. One of the most natural ways to maintain your kidney health is to exercise regularly. Regular exercise improves your heart health and lowers high blood pressure levels, both integral parameters for healthy kidneys.

    Foods that keep your kidneys healthy

    Maintaining a proper and healthy diet is important to ensure the smooth functioning of your kidneys. Load your plate with dark leafy greens like kale, spinach, and chard that are high in fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. You can also have different berries to protect the cell from damage. Apples are a must-have in your diet as the pectin in them prevents kidney damage.

    Drinks that are great for your kidneys

    Keep yourself hydrated throughout the day to keep your kidneys healthy and help them function effectively. Target consuming at least eight glasses of water daily. Apart from this, you can also have lemon drinks. The high levels of citrate in it can keep kidney stones at bay. Cranberry juice is also advisable to prevent any urinary tract infections.

    Foods kidney patients should avoid

    If you are suffering from any kidney-related disease, then stay away from the following foods: -Stay away from avocados, oranges, and bananas as they are rich in potassium. -Avoid consuming whole wheat bread as it contains a higher amount of phosphorous, potassium, and sodium. -Limit your dairy intake to prevent the build-up of phosphorus and protein waste in the body.
