Photos and videos from the scene showed the train slightly tilted, with its first coach hitting a track beam, and its nose tossed in the air. The rear part of the coach also tilted. The undergears, coupling, and bogies of the first coach were severely damaged in this incident.

Casualty update

Committee formed to investigate technical glitches

The train captain, an engineer of Medha SMH, and another staff member were injured in the incident. They were rushed to a nearby hospital in a private car, a civic official was quoted as saying. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has formed a committee to investigate technical glitches that have disrupted monorail services recently, including the August 19 incident. Regular operations on the monorail had been suspended since September 20 for system upgrade work after repeated technical issues.

Public reaction

Safety concerns raised over new trains' CBTC system

After the incident, Shiv Sena (UBT) workers protested outside the monorail depot, demanding a complete halt to monorail services in Mumbai. Transport activist AV Shenoy raised safety concerns over the new trains' Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system. He said "the train should have automatically stopped sensing malfunctioning of the switch beam," stressing that "as trains will be operated without drivers under CBTC system, the safety mechanism should be very strong."
