Prithviraj Chavan is an Indian politician who has served as the 17th Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He became an entrepreneur in 1974 after working in the US in the field of aircraft instrumentation and designing audio recorders for anti-submarine warfare. Chavan is often referred to as a low-profile leader and a technocrat with a non-controversial and clean image. He has also served as the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office in the Ministry of Personnel and Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Pensions, and Public Grievances. He has served as the General Secretary of the All-India Congress Committee in charge of several states like Karnataka, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, and Haryana. After meeting former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Chavan became interested in politics. In 1991, Chavan started his career in politics by winning his parents’ Karad seat in the Lok Sabha. Following this, he won the seat in 1991, 1996, and 1998. He was the architect of the civil nuclear liability bill and served as a member of the Rajya Sabha during his involvement with the Indian National Congress. He resigned as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister following the split of the NCP-Congress alliance.
