5.8-inch upcoming iPhone can be cheapest of all next-generation models
As per its annual ritual, Apple will launch its new iPhone models in the second half of the year. It has been reported that Apple will launch three new iPhones this year, a 6.5-inch OLED model, a 6.1-inch LCD model, and a 5.8-inch OLED model. Now according to new reports, the 5.8-inch model "will be the cheapest of all next-generation iPhone models."
OLED screen cheaper than LCD screen?
The 5.8-inch model will sport an OLED screen and still be cheaper than the 6.1-inch model with the LCD screen. It will be like an affordable version of the iPhone X as it will reportedly retain the features of the flagship device. To keep costs down, this phone might sport aluminum edges and a glass back.
5.8-inch iPhone's bill of materials 10% lower than iPhone X
According to research analyst Luke Lin, this is happening due to a difference in the total bill of materials (BOM). In 2017, the iPhone X's BOM was over $400, whereas the 5.8-inch model's BOM will be 10% lower than the former, Lin said. This cost reduction may lead to Apple positioning it as the cheapest model of all the three upcoming devices.
The lower price tag may affect the new iPhone's RAM
Lin added that the engineering samples have shown that the cheaper successor to the iPhone X has adopted components with lower specs as compared to the 6.1-inch LCD model. The smartphone's RAM storage is most likely to take the hit of its cheaper pricing.
